One thing that really bothers me is when people say they are a Christian but then turn right around and treat people like they are worthless.
How can you call yourself a Christian but have no respect towards others? Do you even know what it means to be a Christian or how to treat others? Have you read certain areas of your Bible that teaches you how you should treat someone? What gives you the right to judge someone?
Let me just give the meaning of a Christian.
- A Christian is a person who adheres to Christianity, an Abrahamic, monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, who they believe is the Messiah (the Christ in Greek-derived terminology) prophesied in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, and the Son of God.
Now what does religion mean. Here we have a few definitions.
- A strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny; “he lost his faith but not his morality”
- Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a supernatural agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
Now I want to address how a real Christian should act. I think that Christians should treat others just like what they call the “Golden Rule” which is one should not treat others in ways that one would not like to be treated (negative/prohibitive form). Also, in the (New American Standard Bible) Luke 6:31 says: “(A) treat others the same way you want them to treat you. You can go to Cross references: Matt 7:12
With that being said we as good humans trying to live right should also follow Luke 6:27- 28
- Luke 6:27-28 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, “bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.”
It also says in Luke 6:37
- Luke 6:37 Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
One of my favorite verses is in Matthew 5:11-12
- Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
So every time someone mistreat me I try to remember Matthew 5:11-12 because I want my reward in Heaven.
I consider myself a Christian and I always treat others like I like to be treated. I do not judge others because that’s not my job to do so.
So please don’t say you are a Christian if you can’t treat people right. When you do that you make those of us Christians who are doing our best and is doing right look bad. You are also playing with God.
So the next time you get ready to throw up in someone’s face how you are such a good Christian think for a second on what you are about to say or do that made you say that phase and if you can’t treat that person the way you would want to be treated than don’t say you are a good Christian.
In short no one is perfect and no one will always treat everyone fairly but it sure won’t hurt to just try a little harder sometimes. And when we are mad or about to say something we know may come across rude or disrespectful we need to stop, take a deep breath and say is it really that bad.
We have to learn to love each other and treat each other with deserved respect. Let’s get that reward one day.
Many blessings
